After years of waiting on the sidelines, Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has made a powerful return to the national T20I squad—and he’s not shy about crediting the people who helped him get there. In a heartfelt reflection, Varun singled out head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav as instrumental figures in his international resurgence.
“Gambhir brings a Spartan mentality to the team,” Varun said in a recent interview. “He doesn’t tolerate excuses. He wants you to earn your place every single day.” That no-nonsense attitude, according to Varun, was exactly what he needed to rediscover his rhythm and confidence.
The term “Spartan mentality” has become synonymous with Gambhir’s coaching philosophy since he took over as India’s head coach. Known for his gritty playing style and uncompromising standards, Gambhir has instilled a culture of discipline, accountability, and relentless work ethic within the squad.
For Varun—a mystery spinner whose career has seen dramatic highs and frustrating lows—this environment proved transformative. Under Gambhir’s watch, net sessions became more intense, feedback more direct, and selection criteria strictly performance-based. “He doesn’t care about your past reputation,” Varun noted. “If you’re not delivering, you’re out.”
| Metric | Pre-Gambhir Era (2023) | Under Gambhir (2024–2025) |
|---|---|---|
| India’s T20I Win Rate | 62% | 78% |
| Player Turnover Rate | Moderate | High (performance-driven) |
| Spinners’ Economy Rate | 7.9 | 6.8 |
While Gambhir sets the tone from the coaching box, Varun also credited T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav for creating a supportive yet demanding on-field atmosphere. “SKY backs his players, but he also expects you to take ownership,” Varun explained. “He’ll give you the ball in a crunch situation and say, ‘This is your moment.’ That trust means everything.”
Under Yadav’s leadership, India’s middle order and bowling unit have shown remarkable composure in high-pressure games—qualities that align perfectly with Gambhir’s vision of a battle-ready team.
Varun’s journey back to the national side hasn’t been linear. Once hailed as India’s answer to mystery spin, he struggled with form, fitness, and selection uncertainty. Dropped after the 2022 T20 World Cup, he returned to domestic cricket and the IPL, refining his variations and rebuilding his mindset.
His 2024 IPL season with Chennai Super Kings—where he bowled with renewed control and picked up 18 wickets at an economy of 7.2—caught the selectors’ attention. But it was his performance in internal camp drills under Gambhir’s scrutiny that sealed his comeback.
With the 2026 T20 World Cup on the horizon, Varun is positioning himself as a key part of India’s spin trio alongside Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. His ability to bowl in the powerplay and death overs gives the team tactical flexibility—a trait Gambhir values highly.
“I’m not here to just fill a spot,” Varun said. “I’m here to win games. And with this coaching staff and captain, I finally feel like I belong.”
