Former India opener and respected cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has unveiled his predicted India XI for the first ODI against Australia in Perth—and it’s already stirring controversy. While the lineup features the much-anticipated return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, it notably omits India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.
In a detailed video analysis, Chopra outlined his reasoning behind the selection, emphasizing balance, conditions, and long-term team building over star power alone.
Despite being fully fit and in peak form, Jasprit Bumrah doesn’t feature in Chopra’s XI—a decision that has left fans and pundits divided.
“Perth’s pitch has evolved,” Chopra explained. “It’s not the express pace track it once was. With evening dew expected, controlling the middle overs becomes critical—and that’s where spin all-rounders add more value.”
Instead of Bumrah, Chopra opts for Mohammed Siraj as the lead pacer, supported by Hardik Pandya’s medium pace and two spin all-rounders to handle the middle phase.
Chopra’s India XI batting lineup looks both familiar and strategic:
The top three mirror India’s golden era, offering experience and firepower right from the start.
Chopra’s bowling combination reflects a tactical shift toward versatility:
Notably absent: Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and even Shardul Thakur. Chopra argues that Sundar offers better batting depth and fielding range—crucial in high-stakes ODIs where every run and catch matters.
The prediction has ignited fierce debate online. While some fans applaud Chopra’s emphasis on balance, others call the Bumrah omission “unjustifiable.”
“You don’t bench Bumrah unless he’s injured. Period,” tweeted a Mumbai-based follower with over 8,000 likes.
However, former selector Sarandeep Singh offered a nuanced take: “In overseas conditions where pitch behavior is unpredictable, having two spin all-rounders can be a game-changer—especially if dew neutralizes pace.”
With the first ODI set for October 19 at Perth Stadium, all eyes will be on Team India’s final XI. Will coach Rahul Dravid follow a similar blueprint—or stick with his trusted pace spearhead?
