Humble Beginnings in Curfew-Stricken Baramulla

In the quiet lanes of Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir, where curfews once silenced playgrounds and uncertainty shadowed daily life, a young boy clung to a cricket ball like it was his lifeline. That boy was Auqib Nabi—and today, he’s being hailed as the “Dale Steyn of Baramulla” for his searing pace and relentless accuracy.

Cricket wasn’t just a game for Auqib; it was an escape, a statement, and eventually, a destiny he couldn’t ignore—even when the odds were stacked against him.

A Father’s Dream vs. Cricket’s Call

Auqib’s father, like many parents in the region, dreamed of his son becoming a doctor—a stable, respected profession that promised security. “He wanted me to study, to wear a white coat, not whites on a cricket field,” Auqib recalls with a smile .

But fate—qismat, as he calls it—had other plans. Despite limited resources, frequent power cuts, and few proper training facilities, Auqib kept bowling. On dusty patches, in freezing winters, and even during internet shutdowns, his passion never wavered.

The Trials, Borrowed Spikes, and Big Breaks

His first major trial? He didn’t even own a pair of cricket spikes. A friend lent him a mismatched set—one size too big, the other too tight. Yet, with raw pace and a slingy action that unnerved batters, he stood out.

That performance earned him a spot in the J&K age-group teams, and soon, he was turning heads in the CK Nayudu Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. His ability to swing the ball both ways at 140+ km/h drew comparisons to South Africa’s legendary fast bowler Dale Steyn—a nickname that stuck.

Mentored by Irfan Pathan, Inspired by Parvez Rasool

Auqib’s journey took a pivotal turn when he came under the guidance of former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan during a national camp. “Irfan sir taught me how to think like a bowler, not just bowl fast,” Auqib says.

But his true local hero has always been Parvez Rasool—the first cricketer from J&K to play for India. “Parvez bhai showed us it’s possible. If he could break the barrier, why not me?” That belief became the bedrock of Auqib’s ambition.

Rising Through the Ranks with Fire and Fury

In recent domestic seasons, Auqib Nabi has been unplayable at times. In the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy, he finished among the top wicket-takers for J&K, consistently dismantling top-order batters with reverse swing and clever variations.

Scouts from IPL franchises have taken notice. While he hasn’t yet landed a contract, his name is now regularly mentioned in national selection discussions—especially as India looks to build depth in its fast-bowling department.
