‘Dekho Starc Saamne Khada Hai!’: Rohit Sharma Gets Bizarre Fan Pep Talk Ahead of Australia ODIs

Rohit Returns to Roots at Shivaji Park

Former India captain and current ODI opener Rohit Sharma made a quiet but determined return to form this week, spending nearly two hours at Mumbai’s iconic Shivaji Park ground. Known as the nursery of Indian cricket legends—from Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin Tendulkar—Shivaji Park once again witnessed Sharma facing simulated pace and spin, fine-tuning his timing ahead of a crucial international assignment.

Dressed in a simple blue training kit and focused demeanor, Sharma didn’t speak to the media. But his presence alone drew a small crowd of local fans, some of whom couldn’t resist offering their own brand of encouragement.

‘Dekho Starc Saamne Khada Hai!’ – The Viral Moment

Among the onlookers was one particularly enthusiastic supporter who, spotting Sharma’s intense net session, shouted: “Dekho Mitchell Starc saamne khada hai!” (“Look, Mitchell Starc is standing right in front of you!”)

The clip, captured on a smartphone and quickly shared across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and WhatsApp groups, went viral within hours—sparking both laughter and admiration for the fan’s creative, if slightly odd, motivational tactic.

“It’s bizarre, but honestly? Kind of perfect,” said cricket analyst Aakash Chopra in a post. “It’s exactly the kind of mental rehearsal Rohit might need before facing Starc’s 145 kph yorkers.”

Fans Pin Hopes on Rohit for 2027 World Cup

While the upcoming ODI series against Australia is the immediate focus, many fans are already thinking ahead to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, which India will host. At 38, Sharma’s role as a senior leader and explosive opener remains pivotal.

“We need him to lead us to 2027,” one fan told reporters near the nets. “Not as captain, maybe—but as the heartbeat of the batting order.”

Sharma, who led India to the 2023 World Test Championship final and the 2024 T20 World Cup semifinals, has not officially retired from ODIs despite stepping down as full-time captain. His experience against Australia—especially in high-pressure games—makes him indispensable, selectors say.

Australia ODI Series: What’s at Stake?

The three-match ODI series, kicking off in Chennai on October 18, marks India’s first bilateral ODI contest since the 2023 World Cup. With the 2027 tournament on the horizon, every match is being treated as part of a long-term rebuild.

Australia arrives with a formidable pace attack led by Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and rising quick Spencer Johnson. India’s top order—Sharma, Gill, and Iyer—will face their toughest test yet.

Match Venue Date
1st ODI MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai October 18, 2025
2nd ODI Eden Gardens, Kolkata October 21, 2025
3rd ODI Holkar Stadium, Indore October 24, 2025

Rohit vs. Starc: A High-Stakes Battle Renewed

The Rohit–Starc duel has defined many India–Australia clashes over the past decade. Starc holds a slight edge with 12 dismissals of Sharma in ODIs—the most by any bowler.

But Sharma has also smashed Starc for 218 runs at a strike rate of 108, including two crucial fifties in World Cup matches. Their next encounter could set the tone for the entire series—and perhaps even India’s 2027 campaign.

So when that fan yelled, “Dekho Starc saamne khada hai!”, he wasn’t just joking. He was reminding Rohit—and the nation—of the challenge that lies ahead.
